چکیده

Consider a dynamical many-body system with a random initial state subsequently evolving through stochastic dynamics. What is the relative importance of the initial state (“nature”) vs. the realization of the stochastic dynamics (“nurture”) in predicting the final state? We examined this question for the two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet following an initial deep quench from T = ∞ to T = 0. We performed Monte Carlo studies on the overlap between “identical twins” raised in independent dynamical environments, up to size L = 500 . Our results suggest an overlap decaying with time as t−θh with θh = 0.22 ± 0.02. This “heritability exponent” may equal the persistence exponent for the 2D Ising ferromagnet, but the two differ more generally.

Long-time predictability in disordered spin systems following a deep quench.

We study the problem of predictability, or "nature vs nurture," in several disordered Ising spin systems evolving at zero temperature from a random initial state: How much does the final state depend on the information contained in the initial state, and how much depends on the detailed history of the system? Our numerical studies of the "dynamical order parameter" in Edwards-Anderson Ising spi...

Nature vs. Nurture in Complex and Not-So-Complex Systems

Understanding the dynamical behavior of many-particle systems both in and out of equilibrium is a central issue in both statistical mechanics and complex systems theory. One question involves “nature vs. nurture”: given a system with a random initial state evolving through a well-defined stochastic dynamics, how much of the information contained in the state at future times depends on the initi...

The Effect of Pure State Structure on Nonequilibrium Dynamics

Motivated by short-range Ising spin glasses, we review some rigorous results and their consequences for the relation between the number/nature of equilibrium pure states and nonequilibrium dynamics. Two of the consequences for spin glass dynamics following a deep quench to a temperature with broken spin flip symmetry are: (1) Almost all initial configurations lie on the boundary between the bas...

Zero-Temperature Dynamics of Ising Spin Systems Following a Deep Quench: Results and Open Problems

We consider zero-temperature, stochastic Ising models σ with nearest-neighbor interactions and an initial spin configuration σ0 chosen from a symmetric Bernoulli distribution (corresponding physically to a deep quench). Whether σ∞ exists, i.e., whether each spin flips only finitely many times as t → ∞ (for almost every σ0 and realization of the dynamics), or if not, whether every spin — or only...

2 00 4 A Note on Edwards ’ Hypothesis for Zero - Temperature Ising Dynamics Federico

We give a simple criterion for checking the so called Edwards' hypothesis in certain zero-temperature, ferromagnetic spin-flip dynamics and use it to invalidate the hypothesis in various examples in dimension one and higher.
